Klean The World - Turning Trash into Cash

Creating the KLEAN ecosystem (digital CDS) that educates and incentivises the community to recycle via depositing containers into KLEAN's Reverse Vending Machines in return for rewards.

Project Information

Problem Statement

ASEAN accounts for more than 50% of the world’s Ocean plastic with the biggest contributors being Malaysia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines mainly due to:

  • Low Awareness of Recycling and Environment - Lack of education on the environment and the importance of recycling leading to poor behaviours towards sustainability practices and recycling in Asia
  • Poor Separation and Collection Methods - Ineffective system designed for recycling and lack of uniform standards among recyclers, drives cost of recycling up and massive leakage due to loss in potential value of plastics not being recycled
Solution

KLEAN facilitates a circular economy for recyclable materials by driving behavioural change towards recycling through education and incentivisation via creation of a digital container deposit scheme, which helps prevent plastic containers from entering our environment. Our solution offering consists of:

1) Smart RVMs - AI tech enabled chute with machine-learning enabling identification of type and brand of containers recovered

  • Separation at source
  • Retailer container recovery data

  • Out-of-Home Advertising

2) KLEAN THE WORLD App - Recyclers scan QR code, collect KLEAN points and redeem rewards

3) KLEAN Dashboard - Real-time tracking and reporting of environmental, recycling, advertising and operation data

Other Details

Container deposit schemes (“CDS”) have proven to be a successful model for countries who have adopted them. Countries with deposit return schemes tend to recycle between 80% and 95% of their plastic bottles(1). At KLEAN, we strive to create our own version of a CDS through collaborative partnerships with corporates.

Whilst the current focus is to collect PET bottles and Aluminium cans in its RVMs, KLEAN’s unique AI software technology can be customised to collect other types of packaging via machine learning.
