LitHubX - Expanding Literacy Hubs Across Malaysia
Project Information
Problem Statement
For many children, missing out on school during this pandemic would mean missing out on a chance to gain literacy, or to be able to read their first book. By the time school reopens they would face a large learning loss which would likely lead to longer term effects and even to dropping out of school.
Solution
LitHub is a community-based literacy programme that provides reading diagnostics, structured resources and support for children to learn to read in English. Each child will be assessed and then guided one-to-one by volunteers or using self-paced modules with parental guidance. We are looking for funders to help us scale up our LitHubX to reach more partner organisations to start their own LitHub for B40 communities and schools across the country.
Other Details
We have seen significant improvement in the reading fluency of the children in our Kerinchi LitHub programme, which has been running since Dec 2018. Due to the pandemic, we’ve pivoted to WhatsApp for all our community programmes and Google Classroom for our school programmes. We’ve seen more parents empowered to take charge of their children’s reading growth through our programmes and hope to see more children benefit from LitHubX!

We provide structured and sustainable reading programmes to schools and communities, in collaboration with school leaders, teachers, community leaders, volunteers, and students.
Our literacy toolkit, one of the first homegrown English materials in the country, is tested and proven to enable students to develop their reading skills within a year. We deliver training to teachers and student mentors on early literacy development and strategies to improve reading proficiency. We also develop customised modules according to the needs of schools to grow the reading skills of their students.
